James Michaels with the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired 

 

James Michaels is an experienced Counselor and Administrator for adults and youth with disabilities. He has worked in the Human Services arena for over 35 years, beginning his career working with children who are deaf and later transitioning into the field of service to adults and youth coping with vision loss. He has been an Administrator for well over 20 years and he currently holds the position of Superintendent/CEO at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Mr. Michaels completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Indiana University, graduating with Distinct Honors. He holds a Bachelor's and Master of Social Work Degrees earning his License Clinical Social Work LCSW Certification in 2001.

James and his wife of 24 years, Connie, reside in Brownsburg, and recently celebrated their son Jesse’s graduation from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. 

James is looking forward to sharing the services offered at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI) and how they transform the lives of blind and visually impaired students across Indiana. He’ll be covering:

Education for PreK-12, including a newly reimagined preschool
Expanded Core Curriculum
Assistive Technology
Outreach Services
Indiana Educational Resource Center

He will also share how students thrive socially and creatively through activities designed to entertain and empower them for the future including various sports, community-based instruction, and student jobs.

In addition, he’ll inform participants about the school’s transition to three temporary locations while we eagerly await the completion of our state-of-the-art campus on College Avenue as well as our strategies for growth and innovation to ensure that every student reaches their full potential.
